DIY Natural Deodorant

21/11/2019

Today I want to talk to you about the deodorant I have been using for over a year now. It’s made with just natural products that are quite easy to find.

Why did I decide to use natural deodorant?

I have always struggled to find a deodorant that would really work for me. The only one I could use is this really expensive anti-perspirant one I could only find in Spain. However, at some stage I kept getting like these little lumps on my armpits. Went to the doctor and I was recommended to do laser hair removal. Did it and those lumps stopped. But, I started looking into the subject and I decided that I wasn’t very pleased with the idea of blocking pores. I amso read a little about aluminium and other products in deodorants, I confess that I didn’t read much because I didn’t want to become obsessed.

And there is where I found this recipe for natural deodorant on a Spanish youtube change (of Elena HG):

  • 2 tsp of arrowroot or cornstarch

  • 2 tsp of baking soda (the cosmetic finely grinded one)

  • 3 tsp of coconut oil

  • 2 drops of essential oil (optional- I use Palmarosa, remember not to use on children or pregnant women)

And… it’s as simple as that! You mix it all in a jam pot and you spread it on with you hands.

To me, this is the most effective deodorant. But, you need to bare in mind that you will sweat as this is not anti-perspirant, but you won’t smell. During the warm summer periods I sometimes need to put some extra on in the middle of the day, as I would do with conventional deodorants

IMPROVED RECIPE:

  • 25% of cornstarch

  • 25% of baking soda

  • 10% of beeswax

  • 20% of coconut oil

  • 20% of shea butter

  • 2 to 4 drops of palmarosa essential oils (optional)

This has become an all times favourite recipe. This is THE ONE. The beeswax solidifies it, which it very handy when you travel (you can use an old deodorant stick or a glue tube, just make sure you clean them and desinfect them!). The shea butter is an amazing product, it soothens, it hydrates, it regenerates and it nourishes skin, I used it all over the body and it’s great on the face as it’s non comedogenic (which means it will not provoke spots)

Warning: the baking soda can irritate. It happens to me every now and then, especially in summer when I am wearing t-shirts that rub on the area. It can be quite painful. I will soon post a softer recipe for sensitive skins.

2nd warning: essential oils must be used with precaution. They shouln’t be used on children, pregnant women or breastfeeding women.
